On January 6, 2011, on what is known as Three Kings Day, I got in my truck and headed east toward North Carolina to visit my family.
My first day on the road took me from Phoenix, Arizona, to Van Horn, Texas. During this drive through the high deserts of Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas, I counted 44 hawks. At one point, I witnessed four hawks sitting on the same telephone pole. It felt as though all of the hawks that had accompanied me on my 72 Days of God journey had shown up on this day to make an obvious statement. I took this day to once again pay tribute and show my appreciation to all of the Hawks for guiding me on all my paths.
After I arrived at my destination in Van Horn, I got out of my truck and noticed that Orion’s Belt was directly overhead in the Texas night sky.
The three stars in Orion’s Belt were called “The Three Kings” by the ancients. These stars were so named around the 17th century, after the writing of the Greek Testament in deference to the story of Christ’s birth.
The strange coincidence was that those three stars had followed me ever since I was a small child, as far back as I could remember. So, it was no surprise that they would make themselves known to me that night.
As I approached the entrance to my hotel, the Ramada Limited, the most beautiful nativity scene I had seen all season, was sitting in the window by the front entrance. I had to pause momentarily to reflect on my past life reading with Marie Friend, who informed me that I was one of the kings who attended the birth of Jesus Christ.
Several days later, after driving across Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, and South Carolina, I finally arrived in my hometown in North Carolina. I spent the following month visiting family and friends.
In February 2011, I put my truck up for sale, left it in North Carolina, and flew back to Phoenix. I arrived in Phoenix on February 2, 2011. After day 365 of starting the 72 Days of God journey, I continued my daily meditations.
By mid-March, my checking account balance was down to $5.94. My sister and brother-in-law helped me sell my truck, and shortly afterward, I secured a freelance web design job with the National Park Service, which allowed me to pay all my credit card bills and state and federal taxes for 2010. Once my checking account balance was back up to $2,000.00, I began paying forward some of the donations that my friends had made during my journey:
Natz: Christchurch NZ Earthquake Fund
Barb: Alzheimer’s Association of N.E. New York (In honor of Barb’s father. See Day 3)
Deb: Mike and Holly Kellogg Fund
Tonya: Anything to do with surviving cancer
Sister: Parkinson’s Disease Foundation (In loving memory of our mother.)
Bonus: Raising Malawi (In loving memory of friends who had died of AIDS.)
I was extremely grateful that I could keep my promise to do this. I considered it an essential part of my journey.
