Fear Of God
Day Sixty-Five – April 22, 2010
As soon as I woke up, I crawled out of the back of my truck and drove to a local restaurant to work on my journal. For some reason, I didn’t feel comfortable staying in the AMC neighborhood. It was very safe and quiet, but I wasn’t sure the neighbors appreciated a strange vehicle parked on the street.
After breakfast, I headed back to Lady Byrd Johnson Park to hang my wet clothes from the day before to dry. I spent the next several hours exploring the park while keeping a very close eye on my truck at all times.
While walking around the park, I saw the following sign. In one sentence, it read, “Wildlife Protected Under Law,” and directly below that was a health advisory for people fishing in the nearby waters. I guess the wildlife wasn’t that protected, and neither were the people.
When I returned to my truck, I noticed an inchworm slowly crawling across the ground next to me while sitting on the curb. Laughing and feeling silly, I thought about my long journey and how I had inched my way across the country.
Worm offers the following wisdom:
- Regeneration
- Purifies the Earth
- Ability to find nurturing within the Earth
- Camouflage
- Ability to wiggle out of difficult situations

Caterpillar offers the following wisdom:
- The power of the whirlwind,
- Reincarnation,
- Transformation,
- Transmutation,
- Magick.
And then, I discovered another exciting message from Mother Nature. This time, it was the ever-elusive five-leaf clover. I looked online for the superstition about the five-leaf clover and discovered the following: “The superstition for the five-leaf clover is extra good luck and attracting money.”
I could sink my teeth into this superstition, especially at this journey stage. After discovering the 5-leaf clover, I got online again to check my email and realized that it was Earth Day 2010. Mother Nature had been doing everything possible to remind me. I was glad that I finally made the connection.
At that point, I decided to dedicate today’s meditation and the following song to everyone everywhere who cared for and loved Mother Earth.
We should all fear the God of cause and effect when it comes to our planet.
I got back in my truck and laughed out loud when I realized that I was so into Earth Day, but my truck only got about sixteen miles to the gallon. That made me realize how life, the government, and even spiritual journals can have certain contradictions.
That evening around 6:00 PM I returned to Rincome for a second helping of Thai food. Victor joined me, and we reunited with one of our favorite servers. The three of us always had so much fun together. The first thing she said when I walked in the door was, “I almost didn’t recognize you! You look different!” It had been almost five years since I had seen her. After we caught up on things, she smiled at me, slapped me on the hand, and told me to shave my beard and get a job! We both laughed.
Later that evening, around 8:00 PM, I rechecked my email and found a new poem from Casey. It read:
It is time for the hawk to appear
A visitor, Chris holds dear.
We miss the hawk’s flight
In the sky, when it’s light,
With his message of hope and cheer.
I couldn’t agree more. I missed the hawk. A visit from the hawk would have been perfect for Earth Day, but something told me that the hawk’s main purpose was to escort me from Oregon to North Carolina and then lead me to an incredible experience with Native American spirits.
I continued, however, to search for any future sightings and remained hopeful and cheerful on the last seven days of my journey.
