Heaven On Earth
Day Thirteen – March 1, 2010
By this time, I was starting to feel at home at Sam’s house. It hadn’t been my intention to stay with him quite so long. I guess the mirroring effect we had on one another made it very comfortable for us to be around each other for long periods. All I knew was that he made me laugh, I could be myself, and we both were having fun.
I liked Sam’s home. It was very comfortable and stylish and felt entirely lived-in. At 48 years old, I still had never owned a home. I never wanted to be tied down to a mortgage or one particular place. I had always been a wanderer.
Sam and I spent the early part of the day running errands and visiting some of his friends. We returned to his place that afternoon and started cleaning the front yard. We spent several hours weeding, moving stones, cutting branches, and sweeping the sidewalk and driveway. I had always loved working in the yard, so to do this with Sam was pure joy. It also allowed me to “pay my rent,” so to speak. We planned to start in the backyard later in the week if I was still around.
That evening, after dinner, we retired to his saltwater hot tub for a long, quiet soak. As we sat there relaxing and taking in the night air, the moon again came up over the horizon and lit up the backyard. It did feel like heaven on earth.
Since Sam was going snow skiing with his tenant early the following day, I made plans to visit Joshua Tree National Park. I didn’t know how to ski, but I had always wanted to visit Joshua Tree.
We both called it a night and went to bed early.
